Dealing with Electronic Waste: The Shift to IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) [Part 2]

In the first of this three-part series, we focused on recycling as part of the IT asset disposition (ITAD) process. This second part sheds a light on the other services provided by ITAD vendors. Bar data destruction; a diverse topic that warrants a post of its own.

As we already pointed out, having a robust ITAD strategy is crucial in the overall IT lifecycle management strategy. Recycling aside, there are other important services in the IT asset disposition process you need to consider: redeployment, remarketing, recovery, software harvesting, reporting and more.

Let’s take a brief look at each, shall we?

Maximizing Value: Redeployment and Refurbishment

When it comes to capturing the value of your company’s old assets, the applicable services can be broken up in two ways: redeployment and refurbishment.

Redeployment occurs when the old assets are still considered to be of value to the organization and are thus returned for internal use. It serves two main purposes. One is to encourage reuse across the different departments and second, to allow the company to circumvent the purchase of new equipment.

In the event that an asset may be deemed surplus to requirements, it can be refurbished and remarketed either as an entire unit or individual components – hard drives or memory, for example.

This ensures you maximize the returns from your asset recovery efforts.

Software Harvesting

Recovery solutions companies often take an inventory of installed software before getting down to cleaning or destroying the hard drive.

Some software asset management (SAM) programs could comprise components like transferring, removing or revoking licenses in their reporting but these tend to be areas that are often overlooked when it comes to taking action. Seeing to it that this software is followed up on can lead to a neat sum being saved especially when you are talking a large number of devices.

Reporting

This is another critical service that cannot be ignored when dealing with the ever changing inventories and a slew of different equipment.

Each IT asset needs to have the type, make, model, serial number, condition, installed programs, drive erasure verification, as well as serialization of asset capture in a report that is readily available whenever need be.

Policy Compliance

In this business, there are two primary industry standards that serve as guidance to consumers and businesses choosing their asset recovery services vendor: e-Stewards and Responsible Recycling Practices (R2).

The industry is littered with bad actors who don’t adhere to proper recycling or asset disposition practices. That is an obvious tell. This is why policy compliance is a strong gauge of the kind of vendor you’re about to do business with. Make it a habit of entering into partnerships after carefully vetting your prospective ITAD vendor.

Of course, these are not the only certifications in place, and measures will vary from country to country.

The third part of this mini-series will look at the other important service of the ITAD process: Data destruction. You don’t want to miss that!
